I was pleasantly surprised by the strong focus on recycling in Sweden. It's impressive to know that more than 50% of household waste is successfully recycled there. This is made possible through a combination of source separation, where residents sort their own waste into various categories, and advanced waste management facilities utilizing state-of-the-art technology. The high level of recycling in Sweden highlights the country's commitment to sustainability and its efforts to minimize waste and reduce environmental impact.

In Sweden, recycling is so effective that the country has almost reached the point of running out of waste. With a recycling rate of nearly 99 percent, Sweden has become a leader in sustainability and waste reduction. This is in stark contrast to many countries, including the US, where curbside recycling programs only collect recyclables in a single bin. In Sweden, however, recycling is legally required, and waste and recyclables are sorted both at home and by businesses before being taken to a recycling center. The country has a system of seven categories for sorting household waste and there is a recycling station within 300 meters of every residential area, according to Sweden.se, the national website.
